DESIGN FOR POSIDONIA
DESIGN FOR POSIDONIA
RECOGNIZED DESIGN MANUFACTERERS AND INDEPENDENT DESIGNERS FROM BARCELONA PRESENT A UNIQUE FURNITURE AND LIGHTING COLLECTION STYLED IN GREEN. ALL THE FUNDS RAISED WILL BE USED TO HELP THE NON-PROFIT ORGANIZATION, GOB MALLORCA, FIGHT AGAINST THE LOSS OF SEAGRASS AT POSIDONIA OCEANICA IN THE BALEARIC ISLANDS THROUGH AWARENESS CAMPAIGNS IN SUMMER 2020.
Many think Posidonia is an algae, well, it is a marine PLANT endemic to the Mediterranean, it has root, stem, leaves, fruits and flowers. We are fighting to preserve Posidonia in the Balearic Islands together with @gobmallorca. There, in the Balearic Islands, is where 50% of the Mediterranean Posidonia meadows live. Hope that with this initiative, we help everybody integrate the concept of underwater plant and forest and make you aware of its huge importance. Just like Amazonas is the lung of the Earth, Posidonia is the lung of the Mediterranean Sea. Long live the Posidonia!
We've made the T-Shirt to help us raise more funds. It is made by sustainable clothing brand Thinking MU and it is 100% organic cotton. Get yours!:
Finding inspiration on the street, Maria Pratts has an aesthetic attraction to the marginal in all her work. She has created this unique coffee table made from an iron structure that actually reads HAHAHACRYCRYCRY welded by hand in iron and painted in green by the artist.
Posidonia has been growing in the sea since the dinosaurs, and one of the biggest issues Posidonia has to deal with is the fact that it grows reaaally slow. The thing is that many yachts and boats ride on the posidonia meadows, plucking pieces of Posidonia that will not grow in a long time. We all want to enjoy the beauty of the Mediterranean Sea and sail its turquoise waters, we must remember Posidonia is key to that beauty as it cleans the water and makes it transparent.
The Garriris fruit bowl is a unique piece illustrated by hand by Javier Mariscal and designed by The Red Woods. It is hand made in terracotta ceramic and painted with Japanese brushes, using lead-free green paint. The illustrations are a cartoon of a Cretan vessel, of Egyptian inspiration.
The Easy Deck chair is a unique prototype and part of the artist’s Deck Chair collection. For this special edition, Cristian has created new zigzagged structure made in iron and painted in green with a green cotton fabric. All his works are hand-made at his studio in Hospitalet.
One of the most celebrated work of one of the main pioneer masters of industrial design in Spain. It is Miguel Milá’s first product that Santa & Cole re-released in 1986, 25 years after its creation, and now it comes in a one-of-a-kind version where the wooden structure has been stained in green.
Marine pollution, mainly that of terrestrial origin such as sewage treatment plants and the bilge water discharge coming from many types of ships (such as wastewater, oils and hydrocarbons) produce turbidity in the water and prevent light from passing through, which makes it really hard for Posidonia's survival.
This unique tubular pitcher/vase is part of a series of forty hand-blown pitches named after Cala d’Aiguafreda, a small corner in la Costa Brava. It is made of two identical glass tubes that play with weight and counter-weight and create a steady structure despite its delicate appearance. For this special edition, the piece has been hand-painted in green.
Global warming happens because of the increase of greenhouse gas emissions, mainly CO2, that capture more solar energy inside the atmosphere. A great part of that heat ends up in the oceans, increasing the sea temperature and affecting the circulation of water. Sea temperature is one of the most important regulating elements of the marine life and has a direct effect on the species that live there. The superficial temperature of the Mediterranean Sea is increasing really fast, and if it keeps doing so at this speed, it may drive to a decrease of up to the 90% of Posidonia meadows that lay in the Mediterranean by the end of the 21st Century. Let’s all help reduce the greenhouse gas emissions to safeguard this millenary ecosystem!
In 1999 Posidonia was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its value. Posidonia is the home of thousands of species and a key ecosystem to measure the Mediterranean’s health. Talking about Posidonia is, therefore, a great opportunity to put marine protection on the table and make society aware of how important it is to preserve the whole marine biodiversity. When we say ’SAVE POSIDONIA’ we do not mean just Posidonia, but all the life-chain surrounding it. Saving Posidonia is all about protecting the Mediterranean Sea. So help us spread the word
Nani Marquina’s Persian Colors collection is composed of tonalities from the natural environment. This unique green rug is exclusively inspired in the color of Posidonia. It is knitted with Persian knot and hand spun Afghan wool through a laborious manual process that enriches the fabric providing a texture of extreme softness.
Meet the unique version of Dipping Light. There is no one like it. The bulb has been submerged in green paint more times than its original version, until the concentric circles have covered the entire screen. As a support, its original brass base has been replaced with an aluminum base finished with an anodized layer called Anthracite.
This unique coffee table is part of the Capsule collection designed by Alfredo López made of lacquered MDF painted in green. The series Capsule comes from the motivation to leave the linear and explore curvature. Extended curves causes the geometric shape of a capsule to occur naturally.
The small Luco stool is a basic three-legged stool with one turned wood leg that reflects an archetypical idea whilst integrating a contemporary sense. The seat and legs of this unique Luco stool are made of beech wood painted in green. A craftsman with a lathe and a carpenter using CNC technology have collaborated in production.
An important measure to protect Posidonia is by public fines. For 2 years, there is a surveillance service in Mallorca of 15 boats that report anchorage on Posidonia. Last summer, of 50,000 boats funded on Posidonia, only 5,000 were informed and only 42 files were opened. That is because the people who report are a surveillance service but are not agents of authority, therefore they cannot fine. We need to start legal persecution, if there is no environmental agent it is likely that any complaint will get somewhere. We need agents to jump into the sea and fine those who anchor in Posidonia meadows.
The ATA bench is designed by Marc Morro and handmade in Lleida. Marc Morro is from Mallorca and he works specially with natural materials as wood or stone. He has created this unique ATA bench made of pine and painted in green.
The Gaulino chair is one of the best pieces by Oscar Tusquets and has converted into an icon in Spanish design. Its name comes from the influences that inspired the designer: Antoni Gaudi and Carlo Mollino. The chair has been reversionated integrally to green stained wood and black leather.
Have you ever seen a beach plenty of Posidonia and thought it was dirty? We did... but we were wrong! Accumulation of Posidonia is super, super good and necessary. It acts as a natural mechanism of the plant, it creates the beach sand (through microorganisms) and forms a barrier against storms and waves, preventing erosion of the coastline (its accumulation on the seashore breaks the waves and helps consolidate the beach sand), among many other benefits. A beach plenty of Posidonia is a clean and healthy beach!
Thanks to DESIGN FOR POSIDONIA we will hopefuly rise the funds (fingers crossed!) for @gobmallorca to develop an awareness campaign in summer 2020 consisting of political actions of denunciation and increasing environmental awareness for the citizens and turists. Summer is the time of the year when Posidonia is threatened most due to uncontrolled turism, anchoring and more waste is being generated. GOB Mallorca needs to make more preassure to authorities, more activisim to point out those irresponsible boats, organize more workshops and information points for local people and turists to know what's happening around with this vital ecosystem and what's the best way to take care of it.
The Five side table consists of five pieces made in iron sheet and aluminum joined together with rivets that give the table an industrial feel. It shows itself as it is, exposing each component and its industrial processes. This unique version of Adolfo’s Five side table has been finished in matte green paint.
